Wallonia's first national park, classified in December 2022 — the only one built to reconcile canoeing and kayaking with a strictly protected Natura 2000 ecosystem. To paddle here is to accept four rules.

Slow, no noise — never disturb nesting birds or the otter. The black stork leaves her nest at the faintest raised voice: never approach her.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

At Kayak-ardenne, the minimum age varies by route. For short routes (7-10 km), children can participate accompanied by an adult, often in a family kayak. For longer routes (11-17 km), the recommended minimum age is 12 years unaccompanied.

It is not strictly required but highly recommended. Wearing a life jacket is mandatory and provided free of charge by Kayak-ardenne. The Semois is a calm river, but being comfortable in water adds extra security.

Bring weather-appropriate clothing (swimwear, quick-dry clothes), closed shoes, a water bottle, sunscreen and a waterproof bag. We provide the kayak, paddle, life jacket and a waterproof bucket.

Online booking is strongly recommended. We sometimes have to turn away up to 200 people per day due to lack of availability. Book 3 to 5 days in advance (15 days for groups).

The price at Kayak-Ardenne includes: the kayak (solo, tandem or family), paddle, life jacket, a waterproof bucket, a safety briefing and minibus transport to and from the start/end point.

Our base in Alle-sur-Semois is both your start and end point. For one-way routes, we transport you free of charge by minibus to the starting point.

Duration depends on the chosen route. Expect about 1.5 to 2 hours for short routes (7-10 km) and 3 to 4 hours for longer routes (11-17 km).

Yes, absolutely! The Semois is very calm, without strong currents, ideal for a first kayaking experience. We offer routes specially designed for beginners and families, such as Alle → Vresse. A safety briefing is given to all participants before departure.

Of course! One of the pleasures is the freedom to stop whenever you like. You can rest on a sandy beach, have a picnic (no litter left behind!) or even swim in the clear waters of the Semois.

Booking online is the only guarantee for equipment availability, especially in high season. Registration allows you to manage your bookings, accumulate loyalty points and enjoy many other benefits.

Yes. The Semois Valley was awarded Walloon National Park status in December 2022, becoming the first Belgian national park. This protects its Natura 2000 ecosystems (Black Stork, otter, European beaver).

Kayak-Ardenne is the only river tourism operator in Belgium with a proprietary real-time API connected to the gauging stations of the Service Public de Wallonie (SPW). We continuously monitor flow rate (m³/s), water level, temperature and a dynamic difficulty index.

The Alle → Vresse (7 km, 90–120 min) route is ideal for a first family kayak outing. Laminar flow, low gradient, accessible from age 3 accompanied by an adult. You will pass under the famous Wicker Bridge of Laforet.

The Semois is a Natura 2000 biodiversity sanctuary. You may spot Kingfishers, Grey Herons, European beavers, wild trout, grayling and, with a lot of luck and silence, the majestic Black Stork (Ciconia nigra) — absolutely forbidden to approach.

Yes, calm, water-accustomed dogs are accepted on short routes (7-10 km), kept on a lead at boarding. We recommend a dog life jacket (not provided).

Yes, rain does not interrupt navigation as long as the flow rate remains within safe thresholds. In the event of a storm, sudden flood or flow rate above 40 m³/s, outings are suspended and you will be fully refunded or rescheduled at no charge.

The kayaking season runs from April to October. May-June offers the spectacular water buttercup blooms. July-August is ideal for swimming (~22°C water). September-October offers flaming Ardennes autumn colours and fewer crowds.

A free car park is available at our base in Alle-sur-Semois. Parking is secured for the entire duration of your descent. Arrive 15-30 minutes before your time slot for the safety briefing.

The solo kayak (1 person) is ideal for independent sportspeople. The tandem kayak (2 people) suits couples or friends. The family kayak (2 adults + 2 children) lets younger children embark safely. All our kayaks are unsinkable and stable.

Absolutely! Many sandy beaches and natural rest stops line the Semois. Bring a light picnic in a waterproof bag. Absolute no-trace rule: take back all your rubbish, including biodegradable items — fragile Natura 2000 zone.

Yes, our base in Alle-sur-Semois has toilets, changing rooms and free secure lockers for your belongings. Showers are available at the partner campsite Semois in Poupehan.
