At Kayak-ardenne, for safety reasons, the minimum age depends on the route. On the short routes (7-10 km), children can take part but always accompanied by an adult, often in a family kayak. On the longer routes (11-17 km), the minimum age we recommend is generally 12 years old unaccompanied. Our staff will advise you on the route best suited to your family.

Although it is not a strict requirement, it is strongly recommended to be able to swim. Wearing a life jacket is recommended and provided free of charge by Kayak-ardenne. The Semois is a calm river, but being comfortable in the water brings a lot of comfort and extra safety to your experience.

Bring clothes suited to the weather that you do not mind getting wet (swimsuit, quick-drying clothes). Closed shoes (Crocs-type sandals) are perfectly fine. Do not forget a water bottle, sunscreen and a waterproof bag for your personal belongings. At kayak-ardenne, we provide the kayak, the paddle, the life jacket and a watertight bucket for your items.

At kayak-ardenne, our base in Alle-sur-Semois is both your start and finish point. For one-way routes (such as Alle → Vresse), we take you by minibus free of charge to the start point, then come and pick you up with your kayak.

It all depends on the route you choose at kayak-ardenne. Allow about 1 h 30 to 2 h on the short routes (7-10 km) and between 3 h and 4 h for the longer routes (11-17 km). This includes paddling at a relaxed pace, with no pressure, so that you can fully enjoy the Semois landscapes.

The Semois is a Natura 2000 biodiversity sanctuary. You may spot kingfishers, grey herons, European beavers (Castor fiber), brown trout, graylings and, with a lot of luck and silence, the majestic black stork (Ciconia nigra) — a strictly protected species: approaching it is strictly forbidden.

Yes, calm dogs used to water are accepted on the short routes (7-10 km), kept on a leash when boarding and under the owner's responsibility. We recommend a flotation vest for dogs (not provided). Long or sporty routes are not recommended.

Yes, rain does not stop navigation as long as the flow stays within safe thresholds (monitored through our SPW API). However, in case of storm, sudden flood or flow above 40 m³/s, outings are suspended for your safety. You are then refunded or rescheduled free of charge.

The kayak season runs from April to October. May-June brings the spectacular water crowfoot blooms. July-August is ideal for swimming (warm water ~22°C). September-October offers the blazing colours of the Ardennes autumn and fewer crowds.

Absolutely! Many sandy beaches and natural banks line the Semois. Plan a light picnic in a waterproof bag. Absolute "No trace" rule: take absolutely all your waste home, even biodegradable — it is a fragile Natura 2000 area.
