Your first kayak trip on the Semois
Is this your first time? Don't panic. Here is all you need to know for a relaxed adventure in the heart of the Ardennes.
Your first kayak trip — stress-free
The Semois is one of the most accessible rivers in Europe for kayak beginners. Everything is designed to turn your first trip into an unforgettable memory, with shallow water, a steady current and the fairy-tale landscapes of the Ardennes.
Every year we introduce more than 4,000 beginners to kayaking. Most have never paddled before, and every one of them reaches the finish with a broad smile, without exception. This guide collects what our guides have been saying for 15 years: requirements, gear, technique, safety and the small tips that turn a good trip into a great one.
The short answer to your doubts: yes, you can do it, and the 7 km Alle–Vresse route was designed for you.
Everything a beginner needs to know
Is it hard?
Not at all. The Semois is a "calm" river (class 1), and the current carries you along naturally. The 7 km route is flat and shallow, and takes about 1h30 without hard effort.
Do I need to swim?
Yes, it is compulsory. The water is shallow and a buoyancy aid is provided, but the law still requires you to be able to swim at least 25 metres, for basic safety.
What is the minimum age?
We welcome children from 2–3 years old as passengers in the middle of a canoe or double kayak. The ideal age to start paddling actively is 7 or 8.
Practical tips
- Book ahead: especially at weekends for the shuttle.
- Check the level: via the badge at the top of the page.
- Bring spare clothes: leave them in the car boot.

5 rules for perfect technique
Hold your paddle correctly
Keep your hands wider than your shoulders, with the scooped side of the blade facing you so that it grips the water.
Look far ahead
The kayak goes where you look, just as a car does. Anticipate bends and obstacles 20 metres ahead.
Keep your distance
Keep 5 to 10 metres between kayaks, especially in currents or under bridges.
What to do if you capsize
Stay calm: the Semois is shallow (usually under a metre). Keep hold of the kayak, swim to the bank, empty it and climb back in.
Respect nature
You are crossing a Natura 2000 ecosystem, so throw nothing in the water and land only in permitted areas.
A fatigue-free trip depends on the right grip.
What should I wear by season?
Spring
The water is cool. Bring long-sleeved lycra, technical shorts, neoprene booties and a light windbreaker, and leave a towel in the car.
Summer
Bring swimwear, a synthetic T-shirt, a cap, glasses with a strap and SPF 50 sunscreen. A water bottle is compulsory.
Autumn
Wear a thermal base layer, long shorts and closed-toe shoes. Ideal for enjoying the beautiful autumn colours of the valley.
⚠️ 3 absolute rules
- No cotton: it chills you at once and takes far too long to dry.
- Closed-toe shoes: trainers or water shoes. Flip-flops are banned, since they sink.
- Empty pockets: your phone and keys go in the watertight barrel we provide!
The 5 most common beginner mistakes
Paddling too hard
Since the current does 80% of the work, paddle calmly: 3 to 4 strokes, then pause and glide.
Paddle the wrong way round
To catch the water properly, the hollow/concave side of the blade must face you.
Grabbing branches
Capsizing happens most often for this reason! Push obstacles away with your paddle, never with your hands.
Forgetting sunscreen
Like a mirror, the water reflects the sun. Sunburn is guaranteed without protection, even under clouds.
Setting off too late
Keep an eye on the time of the last return shuttle (often 6pm). To stay relaxed, set off before 3pm.
What our beginners say
"Water terrified me. The briefing reassured me, and 10 minutes later I was laughing in the kayak. The 7 km went by far too quickly!"
"Three kids, two parents and zero experience. We came back with stars in our eyes, because the water is so calm."
"I assumed you had to be athletic, but I was wrong. At 62, I did the 10 km in a double kayak without difficulty. The scenery is sublime."
