Kayak Descent of the Lesse — Gendron → Anseremme, 12 km to the Gates of Dinant
A single route, chosen for its concentrated Lesse: 70 m cliffs, Freÿr Castle, light rapids — return shuttle included.
Our descent: Gendron → Anseremme
We chose a single route on the Lesse, and it is the best one: 12 km that condense everything the river is famous for — dizzying limestone cliffs, a passage beneath a listed castle, light rapids that make children laugh, and a spectacular finish at Anseremme, on the Meuse. Allow 2h30 to 3h for the descent, return shuttle included.
Gendron → Anseremme — 12 km of essential Lesse
Start at Gendron (SNCB station 5 min away). From the first paddle strokes the valley narrows: 70-metre cliffs plunging into clear water, forests clinging to the rock, herons and kingfishers. Halfway along you pass at the foot of Freÿr Castle, one of the most beautiful in Belgium. A few light rapids spice up the descent without danger, then the river calms before the finish at Anseremme, at the gates of Dinant and a stone's throw from the Han Caves.

Kayaking on the Lesse: the essentials
The kayak descent of the Lesse is one of the most spectacular nature experiences in the Belgian Ardennes. This Namur river, a tributary of the Meuse, runs through a corridor of 70-metre limestone cliffs and wooded meanders between Houyet and Dinant. We chose the most accomplished section: Gendron → Anseremme, 12 km.
A reliable river, even in summer
What sets the Lesse apart: its flow is regulated by the Lac de Nisramont dam. Where the Semois depends on rain, the Lesse offers remarkably stable navigability from April to October — with dynamic passages (light, danger-free rapids) and calm areas beneath the cliffs. Herons, kingfishers and beavers live along the banks.
Freÿr Castle seen from the kayak
The highlight of the descent: passing at the foot of Freÿr Castle, a listed monument of Walloon heritage, with the river below and the cliffs as a backdrop. Take a moment for a photo from your kayak.
Combining kayaking, the Han Caves and Dinant
The finish at Anseremme puts you at the gates of Dinant (citadel, Meuse, gastronomy) and a few kilometres from Han-sur-Lesse and its famous caves. Many visitors do kayaking in the morning and a visit in the afternoon.
Equipment, safety and access
No personal equipment is needed: we supply all the gear. Bring clothes that can get wet, closed shoes and sunscreen. The CE life jacket is compulsory throughout the descent; being able to swim is recommended. A full briefing is given before departure. Gendron-Celles station is 5 minutes from the start (SNCB Dinant–Bertrix line, Namur about 40 min); by car, 1h15 from Brussels via the E411, Dinant exit. Parking at the start.
Families and groups
The route is suitable from age 6 in a two-seater with an adult: the light rapids are fun without being intimidating. For younger children we recommend our Semois routes. The Lesse is also ideal for groups (stag/hen parties, birthdays, team building, schools): sliding-scale prices on our prices page.
