Most of the lower Lesse's heritage is concentrated on the Gendron–Anseremme section. The descent is punctuated by two major sites:
From the very first kilometres after leaving Gendron, kayakers face the impressive Chaleux Needles — Dinantian limestone cliffs rising 50 to 70 metres above the riverbed. Listed as Exceptional Heritage of the Walloon Region, they shelter a rare calcicolous flora, in particular smooth buckler-mustard (Biscutella laevigata) and blue fescue of limestone rocks, Festuca pallens. The GR126 follows their summit, and a beach on the opposite bank forms the first authorised stopping area for boats.
This panorama, one of the most photographed in Belgium, is best enjoyed from a kayak. Originally built in the 11th century to watch over Dinant, it was burnt by the French army in 1554, then rebuilt in its current romantic neo-Gothic form from 1850, under the Brugmann family. The estate is strictly private (not open to visitors). At the foot of the promontory the Lesse is about 60 cm deep — be careful when passing! ⚠️ All kayaks must be back by 18:00. After 14:30 it is too late to board at Gendron and return before closing.
Park free of charge at Anseremme (Rue du Vélodrome 15, 5500 Dinant). Buy your tickets on site; then the operator's shuttle takes you to Gendron. On arrival at Anseremme: hot showers, changing rooms and catering.
The Gendron-Celles station is less than 150 m from the landing stage, on the Dinant–Bertrix line (SNCB 166). A free service carries one bag per person to Anseremme (collect from 15:30). Without the shuttle you save €2.50 per person.
Coaches drop participants directly at Gendron (free drop-off parking), then go to Anseremme to wait for the kayakers. Prior booking is compulsory for groups arriving by coach.

Yes! The Promenade des Échelles (8.6 km, Houyet ↔ Gendron, with metal ladders in the rock) combines ideally with the Houyet–Gendron kayak descent (9 km, no weir). Hike on the way out, paddle back, and take the train between the two for €2.50. Not recommended for bikes, pushchairs and large dogs.
From Gendron, the Lesse offers spectacular monuments (Walzin, the Needles) and the adrenaline of the weirs, but attracts up to 3,500 kayaks/day.
