Kayak Ardennes: The Best Routes & Tips
Belgian Ardennes: a land of water and legends. Find your next river adventure here.
For over a century, the Ardennes have been a kayaker's paradise
Three great rivers, a thousand moods. Going kayaking in the Ardennes means choosing between the wild Semois, the touristy Lesse and the lush Ourthe — each with its own personality.
The Ardenne massif is one of the oldest in Europe, with schist rocks dating from the Devonian, more than 380 million years ago. Today this unique geology carves the spectacular meanders, sheer cliffs and thousand-year-old beech forests that you paddle through. Each river tells a different story: the Semois, designated a National Park in 2022, shelters the most preserved nature in Wallonia. The Lesse, crossed by kayaks since 1898, keeps the soul of historic Belgian tourism alive, and the Ourthe, queen of the northern Ardenne, charms with stone villages such as La Roche.
With more than 15 years of experience and over 50,000 guided descents, we help families, sporty paddlers and contemplative souls choose the river that suits them. Those years spent on the water are what this guide is built on.

The Ardennes, shaped by water and time
To understand why kayaking is so special here, you need to understand the geography of the Ardennes.
A unique geology
Ardenne schist is impermeable, so water cannot seep away. The result is rivers with sustained flows and rocky beds that make the water remarkably clear: from the kayak, you can see your feet.
A living heritage
Bouillon, La Roche, Dinant: the medieval castles punctuate your descents. On your right, kayak between your legs, the Semois flows at the foot of the castle of Godfrey of Bouillon (11th century), leader of the First Crusade.
A Natura 2000 biodiversity
Grey herons, kingfishers, beavers and otters: over the last 30 years, Ardenne wildlife has recolonised the rivers. On the Semois, 1 descent in 3 meets a heron while a few lucky kayakers even spot black storks.
Semois, Lesse or Ourthe?
| Feature | The Semois | The Lesse | The Ourthe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Atmosphere | Wild & quiet | Lively & touristy | Green & calm |
| Difficulty | Easy to moderate | Moderate (weirs) | Easy |
| Crowds | Moderate | Very high | High |
| Scenery | Ardenne forests & meanders | Cliffs & castles | Valleys & villages |
| Verdict | For untouched nature and disconnection | For those who like the tourist buzz between Houyet and Dinant | For an easy descent in the northern Ardenne |
Our verdict, if you want to disconnect and find untouched nature: the Semois is the undisputed choice.
Which river depending on who you are?
Past the comparison table, here is our honest recommendation, depending on what you expect most.
The enduring adventurer
What you want is a physical challenge over a full day, with kilometres swallowed up and a real sense of effort.
More than 7h of paddling, wild meanders and a crossing of the national park. This is the benchmark for experienced kayakers.
The family with children
What you want is safety, shallow water, a gentle current and the option of a swimming break.
Water at 40–80 cm, natural beaches and a duration of 2h. For 30 years, it has been the number 1 choice for families.
The tourist-photographer
What you want is castles, cliffs, a "postcard" atmosphere and lively villages at the finish.
Limestone cliffs, castles and an arrival in Dinant. But brace yourself, as it is very crowded in summer.
6 tips distilled from 10 years of observation
Every year, our instructors see 10,000 kayakers go by. What follows is what they keep telling people.
- Pick the river according to the flow of the day, not the plan you made the night before. At 5 m³/s the Semois is peaceful, but at 30 m³/s it turns sporty. Before you set off, check our flow pages.
- Avoid the Ascension weekend and 15 August. When three Ardenne rivers are saturated on the same day, you get 6 hours of traffic jam. Go the day before or the day after.
- Take the first shuttle of the morning. The river is all yours, the light is superb and you will see more wildlife (herons, ducks, sometimes otters).
- Do not underestimate end-of-day tiredness. In a kayak, 17 km is easy for the first 5, but the 15th km demands concentration. Eat and hydrate early.
- Respect the Natura 2000 zones. These are ecological sanctuaries you are crossing. Do not camp wild, light a fire or play amplified music. The nature of the Ardennes is our shared heritage.
- Go for a two-seater when you are a beginner. It is more stable than a single, so a beginner can learn alongside someone experienced. On your 2nd or 3rd outing, moving up to a single will come naturally.

Blazing colours make it the most beautiful season for photography.

Three descents, three moods
We compared the Semois and the Lesse, and we have come back to the Semois 3 times this year. The nature is incomparable: in 4 hours we passed only 4 kayaks.
An expedition is what the Bouillon → Alle descent is: 27 km, 7 hours on the water and a picnic by the Semois. Two years later, we still talk about it.
It was our first kayak at 55. We chose the 7 km and took twice as long, because we stopped so often. The Semois is far calmer than we had imagined.
The Ardennes are waiting for you.
