Frequently Asked Questions
All questions and answers about kayaks, camping and electric MTB in the Belgian Ardennes. Check the Semois status before your visit.
When is the best time to kayak on the Semois?
Kayaking on the Semois works best from April to October. June, July and August bring the most pleasant conditions: warmer temperatures and optimal water flow.
Should I book in advance for kayaking?
Yes, particularly in high season (June-August) and at weekends. To be sure of a place, book at least 48 hours ahead. Our secure platform lets you book online.
Is electric MTB accessible to beginners?
Absolutely! Beginners are well served by our electric MTBs. Thanks to the electric assistance, you can ride the Ardennes trails without wearing yourself out, and we also have routes suited to every level.
Is the campsite open all year round?
The campsite opens on April 1st and closes on October 31st. Throughout that period all facilities are available, including sanitary blocks, electricity and Wi-Fi.
Where is kayaking allowed?
In Belgium, kayaking is allowed on navigable waterways, and only those not banned by a local decree.
The authorized rivers in Wallonia include the Semois, Ourthe, Lesse, Meuse, Lys and others.
Protected zones (nature reserves, Natura 2000 areas) can be off limits, so always check the official SPW map before leaving.
Which muscles does kayaking work?
Kayaking mainly uses:
- The dorsals and trapezius (back)
- The shoulders and arms (biceps, triceps)
- The abdominals and obliques (core)
- The lower back (stability)
This is a complete sport that is gentle on the joints and excellent for posture and endurance.
Where can I kayak freely in Belgium?
You can navigate freely (without rental) on:
- The Semois (very popular)
- The Ourthe (between Durbuy and Esneux)
- The Lesse (with authorization in high season)
- The Meuse (non-commercial sections)
- The Deûle (authorized sections)
Warning: the equipment must be approved and a life jacket is compulsory. Check the water levels and any local bans first.
What is the average weight of a kayak?
Weight depends on the type:
- Recreational solo kayak (plastic): 12 to 20 kg
- Tandem kayak: 20 to 30 kg
- Inflatable kayak: 10 to 18 kg
Polyethylene models weigh more but last longer. Lightweight models (composites) are meant for competitors only.
Where can you swim in the Semois?
Swimming is prohibited in most sections to protect flora and fauna.
That said, a few municipalities allow swimming at specific spots:
- At Vresse-sur-Semois (supervised beach in summer)
- At Chiny (designated area near the campsite)
Always read the information signs on site, or ask the local tourist office.
Which fish in the Semois?
Rich aquatic fauna lives in the Semois, including:
- Brown trout (emblematic species)
- Grayling
- Pike
- Perch
- Minnow and other small bottom fish
For trout fishing, the river is ranked as a “first category watercourse”.
What are the health benefits of kayaking?
Kayaking offers many benefits:
- Strengthens the upper body (back, arms, shoulders)
- Improves cardiovascular endurance
- Reduces stress (immersion in nature)
- Low impact on joints
- Develops coordination and balance
It is a sport that is accessible, complete and therapeutic.
Which kayak is the most stable?
The most stable kayaks are flat-bottom recreational kayaks with a width greater than 75 cm.
Popular examples:
- Perception Tribe
- Old Town Loon
- Intex Explorer K2 (inflatable)
They suit beginners, anglers and outings on calm rivers such as the Semois.
Is a life jacket mandatory for kayaking?
Yes, absolutely. In Belgium, wearing an approved life jacket (class III or V) is mandatory meant for anyone aboard a kayak, canoe or light craft.
This obligation is written in the Royal Decree of May 15, 1996 relating to recreational boating.
Rental companies provide it systematically.
Which muscles does kayaking work?
Kayaking engages many muscle groups:
- Back: dorsals, trapezius, lumbar
- Arms: biceps, triceps, forearms
- Shoulders: deltoids
- Torso: abdominals, obliques (rotation)
With every paddle stroke a whole chain of muscles is at work, which makes it an excellent functional exercise.
Is it difficult to kayak for a beginner?
No, not at all. Kayaking on a calm river like the Semois is very accessible to beginners.
An initiation of 10 to 15 minutes is enough to learn:
- How to hold the paddle
- How to turn and slow down
- Basic safety rules
Every summer, thousands of families, children and seniors take part without difficulty.
Do I need a permit to kayak?
No. In Belgium, no permit is required in order to kayak for leisure on authorized rivers.
You just need to respect:
- Wearing a life jacket
- Local prohibitions
- Navigation rules (priority, speed, etc.)
Rental companies check age and swimming ability, but no permit is needed.
Is it possible to kayak on the Deûle?
Yesbut only on certain authorized sections, mostly in Flanders and Northern France.
In Belgium the Deûle is canalized and shared with commercial shipping. Ask at:
- VNF (Voies Navigables de France)
- Local clubs (for instance at Courrières or Deûlémont)
Kayaking there is less common than in the Ardennes, but it can be done with care.
What is the speed of a sea kayak?
Several factors (shape, weight, conditions) determine the average speed of a sea kayak:
- Cruising speed: 4 to 6 km/h
- Maximum speed (sustained effort): 7 to 8 km/h
- Records (competition): up to 10 km/h
At sea, an experienced kayaker covers roughly 20 to 30 km a day.
What is the weight limit for a kayak?
The manufacturer sets the maximum load (paddler plus equipment):
- Single recreational kayak (e.g. Itiwit X100): 100 kg
- Rigid sea kayak (e.g. P&H Scorpio): 150 kg
- Double kayak (e.g. Perception Rambler 13.5 T): 227 kg
⚠️ Going over this limit reduces buoyancy and stability, and raises the risk of capsizing.

For a combined day of kayak + nature swimming, consult the safe itineraries on www.kayak-belgique.com.

In case of doubt, ask your kayak rental company. At www.kayak-belgique.com, we guide you to authorized and safe areas.
Is it possible to swim in a river?
