Kayaking in Bouillon Semois Descent in the Heart of the Ardennes

Bouillon holds an exceptional geographical position on the Semois, overlooked by the oldest castle in Belgium, the town offers a unique setting where medieval heritage meets wild nature. The river carves deep meanders here, tucked between wooded hills that shelter it from the wind and create a microclimate that favours kayaking.

For over 30 years, Semois Kayak has run descents from the Bouillon region. Our routes cross landscapes classified as the Major Heritage of Wallonia: forests of century-old oaks and beeches, shale cliffs and alluvial meadows where wildlife (grey herons, kingfishers, otters) can be watched from the water.

The kayak descent from Bouillon suits families with children from 6 years old, and equally experienced paddlers wanting a longer, more technical route. With its regulated flow and accessible rapids, the Semois is the ideal river for a first canoeing or kayaking experience in Belgium.

A landscape shaped over 350 million years

The schisto-sandstone Ardennes bedrock that forms the banks of the Semois at Bouillon dates from the Primary Era. These resistant rocks explain why the river did not cut a vertical canyon, but instead wound around obstacles, producing the spectacular meanders that made the Giant's Tomb and Frahan world-famous.

Between Bouillon and Bohan the Semois falls from 134 to 95 metres above sea level — a 39 m drop over 40 km, which explains its calm and regular character, ideal for leisure kayaking. The average flow at Membre is 15 m³/s, with seasonal variations from 3 m³/s (summer low water) to more than 80 m³/s in winter floods.

The valley is listed as Major Heritage of Wallonia and integrated into the Semois-Attert Natural Park. No fewer than 12 Natura 2000 zones follow one another between Bouillon and Vresse, sheltering emblematic species such as the European otter (Lutra lutra), the kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), and the rare black stork (Ciconia nigra).

Bouillon and the Semois: 1,000 years of shared history

Bouillon Castle was built on a rocky promontory encircled by a meander of the Semois, and the river formed a virtually impregnable natural defence. Godfrey of Bouillon sold the fortress to the Bishopric of Liège in 1096 to finance the First Crusade. The same river saw centuries of tanners, millers and log drivers before tourism replaced industry in the 20th century.

Kayaking on the Semois began in the 1960s, driven by the first sports clubs in Bouillon. Today, more than 80,000 kayakers per season paddle down the Semois, making it one of the 5 most frequented waterways in Belgium for nautical tourism.
