Understanding the Semois flow

The water level of the Semois is regulated by the Walloon Region to protect biodiversity (Natura 2000). The navigability rules are as follows:

The Kayaking Seasons

Spring (April-June)

This is the prime season for anyone who loves green landscapes and generous flows. Nature wakes up, birds sing and the water is lively.

Summer (July-August)

The favourite period for family kayaking in the Ardennes. The water is warmer and shallower, with plenty of chances to stop for a swim along the route.

Autumn (September-October)

Paddling beneath the blazing colours of the Ardennes is unforgettable. Calm returns to the river, so you can disconnect completely.

Kayaking on the Semois: when to go, frequently asked questions

Is the Semois navigable today?

Navigation is allowed when the flow lies between 2.2 m³/s and 50 m³/s. Our live gauge on this page shows it.

When is the best time to go kayaking in the Ardennes?

Spring (April-June) suits dynamic flows best, while summer is perfect for families thanks to calm, mild water.

What happens if it rains?

Kayaking carries on in light rain! In the forest it is even a mystical experience. If dangerous flooding occurs, we cancel and refund in full.

Which month is best for kayaking on the Semois?

May and June give the best compromise: a flow that is still dynamic, long days and lush nature. September is very pleasant too, quieter and less crowded.

Is kayaking on the Semois possible in summer despite the low water?

Yes. In July and August the Semois usually stays navigable, with calm, mild water that suits families. In a marked drought, check the live water level before booking.

Are there periods to avoid?

Avoid winter floods and heavy rain (flow above 50 m³/s, when navigation is suspended) as well as severe drought (flow too low). Our live gauge tells you whether navigation is allowed that same day.

What time of day is best to set off?

Mornings bring calmer water, soft light and more wildlife, and early afternoon is still ideal in summer. Don't set off too late, so that you finish the descent before dusk.
