Tips and recommendations for a successful outing

Before You Set Off: Get Ready

Good preparation makes a first experience go well. Here is what to know before you send your children off on an adventure on the Semois.

Family getting the kayak ready
👶
Minimum Age

From around 4 years old. Younger children may be accepted under special conditions – ask our team.

🏊
Swimming Ability

Recommended, though not compulsory. Every child wears a quality life jacket with maximum buoyancy.

💪
Physical Fitness

No athletic preparation is needed. The routes are short and suitable, so children can start without over-exerting themselves.

💡
Guide's tip
Begin with a short, easy route of 5-7 km. Children enjoy discovering it step by step far more than facing a kayak marathon from the outset.

Equipment & Safety

Kayaking safety comes down to a few simple principles. We supply all the approved equipment, and our guides are certified in water rescue.

Kayak safety equipment

Here is what awaits you on the day of your descent – from arrival to the end of an unforgettable day.

Children kayaking on the Semois
⏰
Arrival & Setup

30 min before. Get there early to park, meet the guide and help the children feel at ease. It is also the time to ask any questions.

🛡️
Safety Briefing

15 min. The guide covers the basic techniques, the emergency signals and the group rules. The children then practise with the kayak on the bank.

🚣
Kayak Descent

2-3 hours. Paddle gently, take in the nature and watch the wildlife, with regular breaks to drink and rest.

🍽️
Meal & Relaxation

1-2 hours. Have a picnic by the water or go back to base to eat. It is time for photos and stories of the adventure.

Tips for a Successful Experience

Practical family kayak tip
☀️
Sunscreen

Apply generously before you leave – the sun reflects off the water! Reapply after 2h and after every break.

💧
Hydration

Bring plenty of water – paddling is dehydrating. Children often forget to drink, so remind them regularly.

👕
Clothing

Wear quick-drying clothes (no jeans!). A rash guard t-shirt protects against sun and chafing.

📷
Photos & Videos

Use a waterproof bag for your phone. Photo memories are precious – share them afterwards!

📅
Best Season

June to September for stable weather. Avoid early autumn and winter – the water is too cold for children.

😴
Rest Afterwards

Plan a relaxed day after the descent – the children will be sleepy! That is normal, the sign of a great adventure.

Frequently Asked Questions

My child is afraid of water. Can they still go kayaking?
Yes! Start with a short and very easy route. The kayak is very stable – your children will stay dry. A life jacket provides total safety. Many children who were afraid end up loving kayaking once they try it.
What is the minimum age to go kayaking?
From around 4 years old. Younger children may take part in exceptional cases – contact us to discuss the possible arrangements.
What if my child falls in the water?
That is very rare. Should it happen, a life jacket keeps them afloat and our guide stays close by to step in quickly. It is also an excellent hands-on swimming lesson.
How long does a descent last?
Count 3-5 hours in total, covering arrival, the briefing, the descent itself and time to relax afterwards. The active descent takes 2-3 hours depending on the route.
Do you need to be in good physical shape?
No! Kayaking on calm water is an accessible sport. Children aged 4 to 80 do it. No superhuman strength required – the paddle does all the work.
What happens in bad weather?
If the weather is really bad (storm, very strong current) we postpone the descent, because safety comes first. You get a refund or you book another date.
